University Day
The celebration of the founding of Obuda University
In its resolution of the meeting held on September 7, 2009, the Senate of Budapest Tech recorded that Budapest Tech had met the statutory criteria for using the designation university.
The leadership of the college - with the support of the Economic Council and the Senate - initiated, through the Minister of Education and Culture, a request to the Hungarian National Assembly - on the basis of Section 18 of the Higher Education Act - for the institution to be declared a university. We also initiated its registration under the name Obuda University, following the traditions of the university founded in 1395 by King Sigismund and re-established in 1410 as the first university in the capital, by amending Annex No. 1 of the Higher Education Act.
On 23 November 2009, the National Assembly adopted bill No. T/10877, which amended Act CXXXIX of 2005 on Higher Education. László Sólyom, President of the Republic of Hungary, signed it on 11 December 2009, and the text section that thus entered into force on 1 January 2010 created Obuda University:
45. §
"In Annex 1 of the Higher Education Act, the subtitle "State universities" is supplemented with the text segment "Obuda University, Budapest", and the subtitle "Non-state colleges" is supplemented with the text segment "Golgota Theological College, Vajta", in accordance with the order of listing determined by the Hungarian alphabet."
Obuda University is the legal successor of Budapest Polytechnic, as well as its legal predecessors, Donát Bánki Polytechnic, Kálmán Kandó Polytechnic, and the Polytechnic of Light Industry. By the decision of the Hungarian National Assembly, on the 600th anniversary of the re-establishment of Obuda University, the new Obuda University, carrying forward the spirit of the country’s second university as the legal successor of Budapest Polytechnic, was established! At its meeting on 13 September 2010, the Senate of Obuda University included University Day among the university’s official celebrations in the regulations on “the order of state and university holidays and commemorations”; it is held every year on 23 November to commemorate the date of the university’s founding on 23 November 2009. University Day consists of a central commemoration, during which the following distinctions are awarded:
